Could Your Gut Be Sabotaging Your Hormone Therapy Results?

You’ve been doing your hormone replacement therapy… but you feel more exhausted & something is still off. Learn more about the connection between gut health and HRT!

You thought you found all the answers, right? You’ve been diligently doing your hormone replacement therapy, eating well, exercising… but several months in, you feel more exhausted, and something still feels off.

Maybe the hot flashes have persisted, your mood swings haven't stabilized, or that stubborn weight still refuses to budge. If this sounds like what you’re experiencing, it might be time to do a little more investigating, particularly into the health of your gut.

          The Gut-Hormone Connection

Our gut isn't just responsible for digesting the food that we eat - it also plays a foundational role in hormone regulation, which is why we end up talking about it so much during our hormone appointments! The gut microbiome is a complex community of trillions of microorganisms. It influences your overall metabolism and helps balance hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol, thus impacting mood, stress, sleep, and so much more. An imbalance in your gut, or dysbiosis, can cause disruptions and symptoms that run the whole gamut of your health.

, and potentially dulling its effects. The good news? Now that you know, you can take action to promote a happy gut, which will also help your hormones and can be less daunting than you’d think!

Why Gut Health Matters When You're on HRT

Let’s talk about estrogen for a second. A specific subset of your gut bacteria - aptly named estrobolome - plays a necessary role in estrogen regulation as outlined by the

. When your gut is in good shape, your body uses what it needs and safely eliminates the rest. But if your estrobolome is out of balance? Your body may end up recirculating excess estrogen or not utilizing it efficiently, leading to hormone imbalances despite being on the "right" therapy.

This is just one example of why we so often recommend gut support for patients receiving HRT here in Green Cove Springs. It’s not just estrogen - A compromised gut can affect how your body handles cortisol (your stress hormone), insulin (which affects weight gain and energy), and even testosterone.

If you're not getting the results you were hoping for from HRT, your gut health might be worth a more detailed conversation with your provider!

Signs Your Gut Might Be Undermining Your Hormone Therapy

If you’re wondering, “Wait - could this be me?”... here are a few symptoms that we often ask patients about that are worth paying attention to:

           Persistent bloating or gas

Fatigue, even after you get a full night’s sleep

Stubborn weight gain, particularly around your midsection

Mood swings or anxiety that don’t seem to improve

Hormone therapy side effects that feel worse instead of better

Skin issues including acne, dryness, or rashes

           You still have trouble sleeping

Some of these symptoms very well may have been what brought you into a doctor’s office to learn more about hormone replacement therapy to begin with! They can definitely be signs that your gut is inflamed, imbalanced, or just not absorbing nutrients and hormones the way it should.

to support your gut and improve how your body responds to HRT.

          1. Focus on Gut-Friendly Foods

Fill your plate with fiber-rich vegetables, leafy greens, fermented foods (like kimchi, sauerkraut, or plain kefir), and whole grains. These nourish your gut bacteria and support healthy digestion.

Avoid ultra-processed foods and excess sugar, particularly artificial varieties, which often feed the wrong types of bacteria and can increase inflammation.

          2. Manage Stress (For Real)

Stress actually can reduce healthy gut bacteria and increase intestinal permeability (hello, leaky gut). Stress can also come in all sorts of shapes and forms… It is important to consider all forms. Consider building in regular stress-reducing habits - like walking in nature, going to bed an hour earlier every night, reducing screen time, or yoga. Certain supplements can also help the body better manage stress, so make sure to check with us at your next visit if you think this is playing a role!

          3. Consider Probiotics & Digestive Support

Probiotics definitely aren’t one-size-fits-all, but for many of our patie

and surrounding areas, targeted supplementation can help rebalance the microbiome. Depending on your symptoms, we may also recommend digestive enzymes or prebiotics, and specific labwork can also help us identify the best supplement options to consider.

          4. IV Hydration Therapy

Did you know nutrient deficiencies can make gut issues - and hormone symptoms - worse? If your digestive system is impaired, your absorption of critical vitamins like B12, magnesium, and vitamin D may be too.

can be a much needed boost for specific vitamins that can absolutely affect energy levels, sleep quality, how well your body handles stress, and much more.

          5. Don’t Skip Testing

If you’ve been feeling off and haven’t had your gut function actually assessed with labwork, let’s change that. At our practice, we offer targeted gut testing that helps us see what’s really going on. While sometimes it might seem nice to just try out a vitamin or a medication to see if it helps, we find that many of our clients have already thrown 9 solutions at the wall to see which one sticks, and we pride ourselves in being extremely targeted in our approach!

          When to Reach Out

Whether you’re just starting hormone therapy or you’ve been on it for a while without seeing results, trust your gut (pun intended!) You also don’t have to be feeling absolutely dreadful to deserve answers - feeling bloated, sluggish, or just “off” is reason enough to have a conversation about it.

Over here at Unique Health we get some questions about “Estrogen Dominance”, so we thought this might be a valuable topic to chat about! But, what exactly is it? How do you know you have it? And most importantly, how on earth do you fix it?!

If you’re feeling extra irritable, more bloated than usual, constantly tired, or your monthly cycles just seem off - you might be dealing with something called estrogen dominance. It’s more common than you’d think, and while the name might sound a little intense, the good news is that there are things that you can do! Here in Green Cove Springs we are seeing more and more patients who have been told “everything looks normal” on their labs… but that doesn’t mean they feel well! Estrogen dominance is a great example of a hormone imbalance that isn’t always caught in traditional medicine settings, but can have a very real and frustrating impact on your day to day quality of life.

          So… What Is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance happens when the amount of estrogen in your body outweighs your levels of progesterone - either because estrogen is too high, progesterone is too low, or a combination of the two. These hormones are meant to stay in balance, and help support each other in that relationship. When they’re not, symptoms tend to pop up.

While we’re on this topic, there’s an additional point we feel is worth mentioning - This isn’t just a “female hormone”. While it primarily affects women, especially those in perimenopause or menopause, men can also experience symptoms tied to too much estrogen and too little testosterone. Make sure to check out our

          Common Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance can often have small, subtle, but lingering symptoms. With that being said, if you know what to look for, the signs are usually there. Here are some of the most common ones we see:

           Irregular or heavy periods

           Breast tenderness

Bloating or weight gain (especially in hips and midsection)

           Mood swings, anxiety, or irritability

           Fatigue even with adequate sleep

           Trouble sleeping

           Brain fog

           Headaches or migraines

Some of these symptoms can overlap with other conditions (like thyroid adrenal issues), which is why working with a provider who takes a whole-body view is so important. Often in traditional medicine these symptoms can fall into seeing different specialists, and while seeking specific expertise is great, sometimes without taking a step back to look at the whole picture things get missed… or worse, misinterpreted.

          Why Does Estrogen Dominance Happen?

There are several possible reasons estrogen levels become imbalanced:

           Chronic Stress

            – When stress is high, your body uses more of its resources to make cortisol instead of progesterone, tipping the balance toward estrogen.

? Tiny gut bugs called estrobolome help metabolize estrogen. If the gut is out of balance, estrogen may not get properly broken down and eliminated.

            – Your liver is the organ responsible for detoxifying and eliminating excess hormones from the body. If it's sluggish from processed foods, alcohol, medications, or toxins, your estrogen may build up.

            – These are hormone-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, personal care products, pesticides, and so much more that if gone unchecked, we often have exposure to every single day. Your body reads them as estrogen, even though they’re synthetic.

            – Some hormonal contraceptives raise estrogen levels, especially if taken long term.

Functional Medicine Approaches to Naturally Balance Estrogen

If any of this resonates, don’t panic - there’s a lot you can do to naturally reduce estrogen dominance and start feeling better. Here’s where we usually start:

          1. Support Your Liver

Your liver is your detox organ, and it needs the right support to process and eliminate excess estrogen. Shifting your diet towards some of the right foods can help support its capabilities. Focus on foods like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale), leafy greens, beets, and garlic. We also often use targeted supplements, such as milk thistle and numerous others, for additional liver support, and customize this protocol for each and every patient.

          2. Heal the Gut

Estrogen is partly recycled through the digestive tract, so if your gut isn’t working properly, estrogen may not leave the body efficiently. We might recommend probiotics, fiber-rich foods, fermented vegetables, or specific gut-testing if you’ve had chronic bloating, constipation, or other chronic digestive symptoms.

          3. Reduce Xenoestrogens

This means swapping plastic containers for glass, choosing clean beauty products, and eating organic when possible (especially meat and dairy). Even small changes here can make a big difference over time.

          4. Lower Stress

Often we find that telling someone to try to lower their stress can wind up increasing it! But at the end of the day, stress does truly impact your hormones. We have found that the tiniest daily habits are what make the biggest result when it comes to reducing stress. Look at your daily habits and see what the tiniest changes are that you are willing to implement every single day. Is it a quick morning walk, or a walk on your lunch break? Is it asking for a little extra help from your significant other when it comes to some household chores? Is it replacing the Dunkin’ Donuts with a coffee from home that has a little less sugar? Perhaps it is something big, like finding a new job that has more reasonable hours. Whatever it is, if it is repeatable FOREVER, these are the tiny factors that are going to impact your stress.

          5. Balance Your Blood Sugar

Fluctuating insulin levels can make estrogen levels spike. That’s why we recommend blood-sugar-friendly meals (protein + fiber + healthy fats) and cutting back on sugar where possible.

          6. Test Before You Guess

At our hormone replacement clinic, we don’t just go off symptoms alone - we use detailed hormone and gut testing to help create highly personalized treatment plans. If you’re dealing with estrogen dominance, this step helps us know exactly where the imbalance is happening - and how to fix it.

          When to Reach Out

If you’ve been struggling with symptoms like mood swings, weight changes, or irregular periods and haven’t found a clear answer yet, we’re always here to take a deeper look and help you get to the root of your symptoms. Estrogen dominance is definitely something that we see in our office, and it is treatable. You don’t need to just deal with it, or chalk it up to getting older.

, but rather than give you a dozen action items we wanted to give you one clear focus that will pack the most punch - your Gut Health. Gut health lies at the heart (pun intended) of your overall health, and it plays a significant role in regulating your hormones. The gut microbiome, made up of trillions of microorganisms, actually influences how efficiently estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones are processed and eliminated. So, if you’re still feeling off despite starting HRT, or perhaps you’re just getting started with your hormone replacement therapy and you’re eager to know how to optimize your results, your gut is the first thing to look at!

Everyone gets an occasional upset stomach… right? Sometimes it’s not as easy as we think to know how healthy our gut actually is. While some indicators of gut health may be obvious, sometimes the signs of gut imbalances can be quite subtle. Practical Gut Health Tips - With an Emphasis on Practical

It’s easy for a nurse practitioner to tell you ‘if you have any of these symptoms, work on improving your gut health!’ The problem with vague advice like this is that without a plan, most people fail. Most human beings we have met who are told to simply improve their gut health start imagining some sort of restrictive diet that includes only vegetables. While yes, veggies are great, we really have found that the smallest shifts in what we eat, what we do, how we live, are what make the biggest changes in our health. So, we tell you to work on your gut health, but also be practical about it, this is what we mean:

          1. Eat More Gut-Friendly Foods Than You Used To

Making a huge shift all at once is often temporary. And even if you know that your diet is a complete disaster now, the tiniest habits that you are willing to create and stick to food-wise are the ones that you’re going to stick with… And therefore will have the most impact! So, what’s the actionable item here? Every time you go to the grocery store pick up one new gut-friendly food (think fiber-rich vegetables, leafy greens, fermented foods, whole grains, whole foods, etc), and one

          less

processed food (think highly processed foods, sweets, artificial sweeteners, chips, etc). Start eating fruit with your breakfast. Add in one new veggie. Instead of picking up the frappucino from Dunkin’, make your own coffee a few days a week. Little habits are a big deal!

          2. Support Your Liver Too

Your liver works closely with your gut to process and eliminate excess hormones. The foods you eat help support how well your liver functions. Foods like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, garlic, and beets can actually help improve estrogen metabolism. We are definitely not saying start eating broccoli every morning even if you hate it and make yourself miserable! But, maybe try out a new summer beet salad with goat cheese or burrata! Or, add a few extra gloves of garlic to a weekly pot of soup. Your liver (and your gut!) will thank you!

          3. Stress Much?

Stress can come in so many shapes and sizes it can be difficult for us to measure just how much of an impact it has on our health, but gut health can be one of the major factors affected by having too much of it. Chronic stress doesn’t just take a toll on things like sleep health and heart health - it can actually change your gut bacteria composition and increase gut permeability (also known as leaky gut). Reducing stress in our lives is best done by changing lifestyle habits… But these can often be things that can be challenging for us to change. Here is where it can be important to committing to tiny changes in our habits:

Going to sleep a tiny bit earlier - And, at the same time every night.

Getting off our phone a little bit sooner before going to bed.

           Reducing clutter in our home

Considering the stress of our work life and if that is having a negative impact

Considering how much exercise and movement we are incorporating into our daily lives

Considering our relationships with family and friends and if that is reducing our stress (or creating it)

At the end of the day, some of these stress components can be difficult (or impossible) to change, but we encourage you to consider where your life does have wiggle room.. Can you take a walk and get outside for your lunch break at work? Can you plug in your phone across the room before you go to bed, rather than falling asleep with it on your pillow? Can you schedule an evening once a month to unplug from the stress of the day-to-day and connect with a friend or spouse? These tiny changes can make all the difference!

4. Supplement with Intention

When we talk about supplements here, we specifically want to talk about probiotics to help promote that healthy gut microbiome! Not all probiotics are created equal. We may recommend a targeted probiotic at your appointment based on your specific symptoms, labwork, and medical history. Don’t just buy something off of Amazon - Let’s make sure it’s right for

          5. Test - Don’t Guess.

Many of the patients that come into our office have tried dozens of supplements and suffered through ultra-strict diets, but haven’t actually had a gut health assessment. Our functional medicine approach includes lab testing to give us a clear roadmap to support your digestion, microbiome, and overall wellness. If this sounds like you, it might be time to come in for a consult.

Let’s be honest - when you’re just feeling ‘off’, or not feeling like yourself in a way you can’t really pinpoint, it can be hard to explain a few vague symptoms to your health professional to have them try to help you.

Maybe you're tired all the time, or seem to keep gaining weight for no obvious reason, or you have found yourself snapping at your partner over things that wouldn’t normally bug you. If you’ve had some of those “why on earth did I do that?” or “what is wrong with me?!” moments lately, you’re not the only one! Sometimes a hormone imbalance can be at the root of some of the most irritatingly persistent yet nonspecific symptoms that middle-aged women (and men!) can have.

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers - and when even just one is out of balance, it can throw

          everything

off. We see this every day at our clinic: smart, capable people who’ve been trying everything to feel better, exercising and eating healthfully, but didn’t realize their hormones were quietly working against all of their efforts!

So how do you actually know if your hormones are out of whack? Let’s look at five common signs - and more importantly, what you can do about it.

          1. You’re Exhausted… Even When You Sleep

Sure, we all get tired. But if you're waking up groggy, dragging through the day, and relying on caffeine to function - something more significant might be going on. Hormones like cortisol (your stress hormone), thyroid hormones, and even low testosterone (yes, in women too!) can impact your energy. Cortisol is our ‘fight or flight’ hormone but when we’re constantly stressed, this hormone can remain higher than it should for long periods of time. The result? Burnout.

So, what do you do? Our #1 recommendation is to start with comprehensive hormone testing. This is almost always different than the traditional bloodwork that a primary care provider may suggest. At Unique Health we offer complete lab testing as well as hormone replacement therapy when necessary tailored to your needs right here in Green Cove Springs and for our patients in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Feeling rested and focused again is possible - You can always

          2. Mood Swings Are Taking Over

One minute you’re fine, the next you’re irritable, anxious, or in tears for no reason. If this is ringing a bell for you, estrogen, progesterone, and/or testosterone may be responsible. When these hormones fluctuate - like during perimenopause, postpartum, or times of extreme stress - your emotional balance can fluctuate with it.

that fluctuations in estrogen levels are associated with an increased risk of depression in women, particularly during perimenopause and postpartum. While medication such as antidepressants can often be looked at for relief, by actually looking at the hormone levels and rebalancing them, we can work to bring emotional stability back into your life. Our hormone replacement clinic takes a whole-body approach, including hormone therapy, nutrition, and stress-reduction strategies that support both your mental and physical well-being.

So, you’re eating well.. exercising.. and still seeing that stubborn number on the scale climbing or just plain refusing to budge. If this is the case, it might be time to think about if hormones are playing a role. Health concerns like Insulin resistance, low thyroid function, and high cortisol can all contribute to stubborn weight gain, particularly around your midsection. According to the

Low sex drive isn’t just about aging - it’s often about hormonal balance. Estrogen, testosterone, and even cortisol levels influence libido. If intimacy has started to feel like one more thing on your to-do list, your hormones could be working against you. This is one of the most common (and most fixable!) symptoms we treat. Hormone therapy, stress support, and lifestyle adjustments can reignite your energy and your connection - without it feeling forced or fake.

Sometimes, it’s not one glaring symptom but a combination of little things - bloating, brain fog, a tough time focusing, sleep issues, skin breakouts, or just feeling… off. Hormonal imbalances don’t always scream - they whisper. And they can affect your gut health, your sleep cycles, and how your brain functions. So, what can you do?

Ever had one of those days where you just feel off for no obvious reason? Your mood jumps back and forth between happy, irritable, and weepy, your patience is razor-thin, and even the little things - like losing your car keys for example - make you completely lose it. Sound familiar at all? Your hormones may be playing a role… But how do you know for sure? We are so glad you asked!

At our Green Cove Springs hormone replacement clinic, we talk to people every day who feel like they’re stuck in an emotional fog - anxiety, depression, mood swings, or just feeling

          unlike themselves

. What many don’t realize is that their mental health struggles could be connected to their hormones. As we often talk about in functional medicine, our entire body is connected. This includes hormones, our diet, our lifestyle, and of course our mental health. The connection between your mental health and your hormones is a powerful one, and one worth learning more about if you’re seeking answers for mood swings and coming up short.

          How Hormones Influence Mental Health

Your hormones act like chemical messengers, constantly sending signals that affect your mood, energy levels, and even how you respond to stress. When your hormones are balanced, life feels easier and we tend to be able to bob and weave so-to-speak much more easily as our day throws various obstacles at us. But when they’re not? Mental health symptoms can emerge, including anxiety, depression, irritability, and brain fog.

So, what are the biggest hormones playing a role in mental health?

          1. Estrogen & Progesterone: The Mood Regulators

Estrogen plays a key role in serotonin production (a.k.a. the “feel-good” neurotransmitter). When estrogen drops - like naturally during perimenopause, menopause, or even certain points in your menstrual cycle - your serotonin levels can take a hit. This can lead to mood swings, depression, and other mental health symptoms.

Progesterone has a calming effect, almost like nature’s built-in anti-anxiety hormone. But when it’s too low, stress and irritability can creep in.

If you ever feel extra emotional before your period, that is often the estrogen-progesterone shift in action! The role of estrogen in mood regulation is well-documented, with studies from

          2. Cortisol: The Stress Hormone

Cortisol spikes when we’re stressed, which is great if you’re running from a bear, but not so great if you’re just trying to get through your daily to-do list.

Chronic high cortisol levels can lead to anxiety, sleep issues, and even depression.

On the flip side, if cortisol gets too low (often after long-term stress or burnout), you might feel exhausted, unmotivated, and emotionally drained.

If you’re constantly wired but tired, or if stress feels impossible to handle, your cortisol levels might need some attention! Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels have been linked to increased anxiety and depression, according to research from the

          3. Thyroid Hormones: The Energy Drivers

Your thyroid is responsible for regulating metabolism, energy, and - you guessed it - mood.

When thyroid hormones are too low (hypothyroidism), you may experience depression, fatigue, and brain fog.

Yes, women have testosterone, too! It plays a key role in motivation, mental clarity, and mood stability.

Low testosterone can leave you feeling unmotivated, fatigued, or even depressed - a common issue as both men and women age.

What Can You Do to Support Hormonal & Mental Well-Being?

Okay, so now we know which hormones are the common instigators wreaking havoc on mental health. But, we promise there’s good news! There are ways to bring them back into balance. Here’s where to start:

          1. Get Your Hormones Tested

If you suspect your hormones are affecting your mood, the first step is getting tested. A thorough hormone evaluation can reveal imbalances and let us know what we’re dealing with, so that we can help you find a solution and a plan that works for YOU. We know. This is a tough one for many. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night (poor sleep = poor hormone regulation). Even if you start with baby steps, your body and your hormones will thank you!

We’ve been there, and so has basically every woman who went through menopause! We thought this would be a helpful conversation for us to have and provide insight into, because while most of us know how important exercise is, did you know that the

of exercise you do can have a direct impact on your hormones?! Whether you’re struggling with fatigue, stubborn weight gain, or mood swings, or perhaps you already know your hormones are a bit out of whack - your workout routine could either be helping or hurting your hormonal balance, and therefore often your outlook on your entire day!

At our Green Cove Springs Florida practice, we take a functional medicine approach to whole-body wellness, helping people understand how movement, diet, and lifestyle all work together to create better holistic health. And when it comes to hormones, not all workouts are going to benefit you in the same way… In fact some things you do can be counterproductive.

So let’s talk about the best (and worst!) ways to exercise for hormonal balance and how you can start moving smarter to live better!

          How Exercise Affects Your Hormones

Your hormones act as chemical messengers, regulating everything in your body from metabolism and stress to sleep and reproductive health. The way you exercise can either support or disrupt this delicate balance. Here are some of the key hormones that fit into this balance:

           Cortisol (The Stress Hormone)

            – Some stress is good (for example in an emergency situation), but constantly high levels of cortisol can cause energy burnout, weight gain, inflammation, and fatigue. This is an important fact to keep in mind, as overtraining or high-intensity workouts during menopause without enough recovery can keep cortisol levels high, leading to hormonal chaos and literally the opposite results of the ones we actually want to achieve!

           Insulin (Blood Sugar Regulation)

            – Strength training and moderate cardio improve insulin sensitivity, helping your body use glucose more efficiently and can reduce the risk of weight gain.

           Estrogen & Progesterone (Female Hormones)

            – Exercise helps keep a good balance of estrogen and progesterone, but excessive endurance training can sometimes cause imbalances, particularly in women.

           Testosterone (Muscle & Energy Booster)

            – Strength training naturally boosts testosterone, which supports muscle growth, energy, and libido - This is important for both men

           Growth Hormone (Repair & Recovery)

            – Released during deep sleep and exercise, this hormone is essential for muscle repair, fat metabolism, and overall vitality.

Focus on compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and push-ups, which target multiple large muscle groups (these are the best bang for your buck also!) Aim for 2-4 strength workouts per week to see the best results.

If stress is a big factor for you, the breathwork components of 20-30 minutes of yoga or Pilates a few times a week can make a noticeable difference in your energy and mood!

Keep HIIT sessions to 2-3 times per week and pair them with rest days or low-impact movement to avoid hormone burnout.

What Workouts to Avoid (or Use in Moderation)

Chronic Cardio (Too Much Running or Endurance Training)

           – If you’re spending hours on the treadmill but still feeling exhausted, bloated, or stuck at a weight plateau, overdoing cardio is a big factor to consider. You shouldn’t be finding yourself running longer and longer to maintain your weight. Long sessions of steady-state cardio can increase cortisol and burn through muscle instead of fat, literally doing the opposite of what you are trying to achieve!

Excessive High-Intensity Training (HIIT Every Day)

           – While HIIT is great in moderation, daily intense workouts can spike cortisol and lead to adrenal fatigue. If you love HIIT, make sure you are balancing it with other forms of less intense movement.

Whether it’s late-night emails, binging on Netflix movies, or simply tossing and turning thinking about too many things at night, poor sleep can quickly become the norm… and its impact can be quite detrimental.

We all know sleep is important, but it’s often one of the first things that gets pushed down the priority list when life gets hectic. While people know that not getting enough sleep (OF COURSE) makes us sleepy and maybe a little foggy through the day, what you might not realize is how deeply sleep impacts your hormones - and how those hormones, in turn, affect your energy, mood, and even weight. If you’re in Green Cove Springs, Jacksonville, or nearby towns like Fleming Island, we’re here at Unique Health to help you understand the sleep-hormone connection, and how it may be the key to transforming how you feel in your day-to-day. Let’s go into some more detail on exactly why quality sleep is so much more than a luxury - it’s the missing puzzle piece in balancing your health (and your hormones!)

          How Sleep Impacts Your Hormones

Your body is a finely tuned machine, and sleep is one of the critical maintenance periods it needs to function properly. During deep sleep, your body produces and regulates hormones that affect everything in your body from appetite to stress to how well you actually process fat and sugar. So, which hormones are tied to our sleep? Well, there are a few:

          1. Cortisol: The Stress Hormone

You may have heard of cortisol as the “fight or flight” hormone, but there really is so much more to it than that! Cortisol is designed to reach its highest levels in the morning, giving you the energy to start your day, and gradually decline at night to allow for us to fall asleep. But, when you’re sleep-deprived, cortisol stays elevated, disrupting your natural rhythm and even potentially contributing to underlying inflammation in the body. Chronic high cortisol can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and even decreased immune function. According to the

, chronic stress and poor sleep form a vicious cycle, where one worsens the other, further impacting cortisol levels.

          2. Leptin and Ghrelin: Appetite Regulators

While many have heard of cortisol, fewer have heard of leptin and ghrelin. These two work hand in hand, which is why we talk about them together! Sleep also influences the hormones that control hunger. Leptin tells your brain when you’re full, while ghrelin signals hunger. Poor sleep decreases leptin and increases ghrelin, leaving you feeling hungrier and less satisfied by the food that you do eat. This can even impact the foods that you want to reach for when you are hungry, resulting in poorer food choices overall. Research published in the

          3. Growth Hormone: Repair and Recovery

Wondering why when you don’t sleep well the scale just doesn’t seem to budge (or it jumps in the wrong direction!?) Deep sleep is when your body releases growth hormone, which is essential for muscle repair, fat metabolism, and overall recovery. If you’re missing out on deep sleep stages, your body can’t perform these vital functions. Poor sleep literally negatively impacts your metabolism. Over time, this can lead to reduced muscle mass, increased fat storage, and slower recovery from workouts or injuries.

           Increased sugar or carb cravings:

Hormonal imbalances caused by poor sleep often drive all the cravings for the not-so-great-for-you foods.

Without enough growth hormone during sleep, your body struggles to recover and metabolize fat effectively. If that scale just doesn’t want to seem to budge no matter what you do, poor sleep could be a contributing factor.

This can signal imbalances in melatonin or even cortisol spikes. Poor sleep and hormone imbalances can be a cycle that contribute to one another.

How to Improve Sleep and Balance Hormones

Improving sleep takes deliberate actions, but we promise that the payoff is worth it! Here are some of our best actionable steps, with some extra tips you may not have considered:

          1. Adjust Your Evening Diet

Did you know that magnesium-rich foods like spinach, almonds, and dark chocolate can naturally relax your muscles and prepare your body for sleep? On the other hand, alcohol might make you sleepy initially but disrupts deep sleep stages later. According to the

, reducing heavy meals and alcohol intake later in the evening can significantly improve sleep quality. So, consider picking up a lighter snack and a nice mocktail this holiday season if you’re trying to improve your Z’s.

          2. Support Melatonin Production Naturally

Melatonin is your body’s sleep hormone, and exposure to artificial light in the evening can suppress its production. Avoid screens for at least an hour before bed, or use blue-light-blocking glasses. Better yet, take an evening walk outside - that natural light exposure during the day can actually help regulate your melatonin at night. If you’re looking to take this a step further, a significant amount of melatonin is actually produced in your gut! Focusing your gut health and even focusing foods with Tryptophan, which is a precursor to melatonin, can help promote healthy sleep (yes, what is in that holiday turkey!)

          3. Create a Sleep-Optimized Environment

This goes beyond just keeping your room dark. Cooling your bedroom to 60-67°F and even using weighted blankets can promote deeper, healthier sleep. According to research from

, cooler temperatures are linked to better REM sleep and overall hormonal regulation.

          4. Consider Hormone Testing

If you’ve tried everything and still struggle with sleep, it might be time to explore hormone testing. Imbalances in cortisol, melatonin, or thyroid hormones can often go undiagnosed but can play a significant role in sleep quality.

The Hormone-Weight Connection: Causes, Effects, and Solutions

If you're struggling to lose weight no matter what you try, your hormones may be something to consider. Here we look into the many connections between hormones, hunger, weight loss, and how to get started on the right track towards better health!

While we could tell you over and over, “It’s not about the numbers on the scale, it’s about how you feel!” we all know that there can be a relationship between how we feel and those numbers on the scale slowly creeping up through menopause.

Weight gain can be frustrating and discouraging, especially when it feels like you’re literally doing everything right - eating healthy, trying your best to stay active, limiting those extra glasses of wine or extra slice of cake.. Yet the scale doesn’t budge, or worse, it keeps creeping up. So, what do you do?! If this sounds familiar, it might be time to consider a factor that often flies under the radar: your hormones.

Hormones play a central role in weight management, from regulating your metabolism and controlling your appetite to actually deciding what your body does with the foods you eat. They can also impact sleep, energy levels, and we hate to say it - EVEN THE FOODS YOU FEEL LIKE EATING (no girl, the constant desire to grab the doritos instead of an apple is not entirely on you!) When your hormones are in balance, your body tends to feel like it’s running smoothly. But, when they’re out of balance, it can feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle when it comes to your weight.

So How Can Hormones Affect My Weight?

Let’s talk about some of the major players when it comes to hormones and weight gain. Think of your hormones as your body’s internal control system - they regulate your metabolism, play a key role in hunger, and tell your body what to actually do with the food that you eat. When they’re in balance, your body runs like a well-oiled machine, efficiently burning calories, maintaining energy, and keeping cravings in check.

When hormones are out of balance, your body may increase fat storage, particularly around your midsection. Insulin resistance can actually make it harder for your body to use stored fat for energy, leading to weight gain despite your best efforts. And hormonal changes during menopause or thyroid imbalances can slow your metabolism, making it feel like your body is working against you.

The end result? You might notice stubborn weight creeping on, have difficulty losing it, or even experience new food cravings you have never had before. Hormonal imbalances don’t just make weight management harder—they can affect your energy, mood, and overall sense of well-being. Understanding these hormonal players is the first step toward taking back control of your weight and health.

          1. Cortisol

Ah, stress. We’ve all been there, juggling work deadlines, family responsibilities, and daily challenges. When stress piles up, your body produces cortisol, the infamous “stress hormone.” A little cortisol is fine—it helps you respond to emergencies. But when it’s constantly elevated (hello, busy life in Jacksonville!), it can trigger sugar cravings, increase abdominal fat, and make weight loss feel impossible. Working a sedentary job can make this even worse, as being sedentary can also potentially increase your resting cortisol levels. So, how do you manage it? We know you might be thinking better stress management is much easier said than done, but we promise we will give you some great actionable steps in a moment.

          2. Insulin

Insulin is a hormone that regulates your blood sugar. When we eat a lot of processed foods or sugary snacks, our body can become resistant to insulin, making it harder to burn fat and easier to store it. This insulin resistance is a common issue, but the good news is that you can improve your own insulin sensitivity with the right diet and lifestyle changes.

          3. Thyroid Hormones

Your thyroid is like your body’s thermostat, controlling your metabolism. When thyroid hormones are low (a condition called hypothyroidism), your metabolism can slow down, leading to weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, and other unwanted side effects. If you’re experiencing unexplained weight gain and exhaustion, it may be time to check your thyroid function with some simple bloodwork we offer right here in our Green Cove Springs office.

          4. Estrogen and Progesterone

These hormones are crucial for women’s health, but when they fluctuate - such as during menopause - they can lead to increased fat storage, especially around your belly. Estrogen dominance (too much estrogen relative to progesterone) can also be a culprit in stubborn weight gain. Balancing these hormones can be key in these cases to regaining control over your weight.

          Is Your Weight Gain Hormone-Related?

How can you tell if hormones are the culprit behind your weight struggles? Here are some common signs:

Persistent belly fat that won’t budge, no matter what you try

Constant sugar cravings or feeling “hangry” often (we have all been there but this might be particularly persistent)

Mood swings, irritability, or unexplained fatigue

Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

Continuing to gain weight despite eating well and exercising

If these sound familiar, some labwork and a consult with a provider specializing in hormone balance may be worth your time. Many women experience these symptoms without realizing hormones could be to blame, when some simple bloodwork could help them get to the bottom of their health concerns! (If this is you,

Practical Tips to Support Hormone Balance

Balancing your hormones is not a sprint, it’s really about making small, consistent changes that add up to BIG results in how you feel. Here are some of the little things that we have found add up to the best results:

          1. Focus on Whole Foods

A diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods can work wonders for balancing hormones. Think colorful veggies, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Leafy greens, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds are excellent choices. Foods like flaxseeds and cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli and cauliflower) are particularly good for balancing estrogen. You might be thinking “Okay, eating like this is definitely going to INCREASE my stress levels”, but if this diet doesn’t sound like what you’re already doing, DON’T WORRY! It’s the little changes over time that are going to give you the best results. Not a huge veggie person? Don’t start eating 6 salads a day! JUST ADD ONE veggie into one meal every day. Not a chef or low on time? A rotisserie chicken can be the start to a rounded out meal. Really craving some takeout? Opt for some fresh sushi rather than the all-fried chinese food that’s your usual go-to. Really, these little changes will add up!

          2. Tame Your Stress Levels

We get it—managing stress is easier said than done. Between work and life, it’s hard to slow down. But finding the opportunity to make small changes could be simpler than you think. Start going to bed at the same time every night (bonus points if you wake up at the same time every morning too!) Turn on some music and dance over the stove while you’re making dinner. Make it a regular habit to put down your phone and turn off the news! Even a walk along the St. Johns River or in your neighborhood park can do wonders for your mental and physical health.

          3. Sleep Smarter

Poor sleep doesn’t just leave you groggy; it can also throw your hormones out of whack, which in turn can affect your appetite, how you store the food that you eat, and your overall energy and attitude for the day! Aim for 7-9 hours a night. Struggling with sleep? Turn off the TV 30 minutes before you go to bed and read a little instead. Turn off the blue light on your phone at a certain time (Night Shift on iphone or Night Light on android are settings that allow you to schedule blue light reduction on your phone!) as blue light exposure can actually impact your quality of sleep. Do some light stretching to help with restless legs. Certain supplements can also help support healthy sleep quality, so ask us about this at your next appointment if sleep issues are something you are concerned about (and maybe we need to write a blog post on this!)

          4. Get a Professional Consult

If lifestyle changes don’t seem to be doing the trick, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might be the next step. HRT helps restore balance to hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which can make a big difference in weight management.

Regular exercise is essential for keeping insulin and cortisol levels in check. And we’re not just talking about walking on a treadmill! Make those muscles get to work!!! Building and maintaining muscle increases your metabolism and even helps you burn more calories even at rest, which is critical as we get older and our muscle mass begins to decline.

The right foods can support healthy hormone production, improve your energy levels, and even help you get a better night’s sleep! So, what should you eat—and what should you avoid—to keep your hormones happy? Here are a few of our favorite foods and tips over at Unique Health!

Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers, regulating everything from metabolism and mood to (of course, their most famous role) reproductive health. Your diet provides the building blocks for hormone production and can significantly impact how well your hormones function. Certain nutrients support hormone balance, while others can cause disruptions in their communication - Particularly in our world today of food dyes, “food-like products”, artificial sugars, and other concerning ingredients. It’s more important than ever to consider being a little more mindful about what’s going on your plate, and making tiny sustainable changes over the long haul is how we really see the best results! Here are some of our favorite hormone-loving foods, as well as a few that you may want to start steering clear of on your path to better hormone health and healthy aging!

We are a half a lifetime away from that withering diet advice that once told us to avoid fats at all costs. It turns out, fats do NOT actually make us fat - Healthy Fats are protective of our cells, provide long lasting energy, and if you’re looking for that youthful skin glow… You’ve come to the right nutrient! Healthy fats are also essential for hormone production. Foods like avocados, olive oil, and nuts provide monounsaturated fats, while fatty fish like salmon offer omega-3 fatty acids that support hormone health and actually can help reduce inflammation. Many studies including this one published in the

          3. Fiber is not just for your grandmother - It’s for EVERYONE

Fiber helps stabilize blood sugar and can prevent insulin spikes, which are a major culprit in disrupting hormone balance. No, we’re not just talking about taking a Fiber One supplement! Fruits & Vegetables have a great dose of fiber, as do oats, flaxseeds, and whole grains. If you’re a rice lover, you’ll be excited to learn that the wild varieties with that nice chewy husk on the grains are much higher in fiber than their fully processed counterparts! Flaxseeds, are also a powerhouse—they contain lignans, compounds that specifically can help balance estrogen.

          4. Let’s all be a little more like Popeye

Leafy greens like spinach and Swiss chard are rich in magnesium, which helps regulate cortisol, and therefore how well your body responds to stress. Magnesium also supports the adrenal glands, key players in your body’s stress response system, and also supports healthy sleep at night (which in turn reduces stress - funny how that works!) Adding a handful of greens to your daily meals is an easy way to support hormone health naturally - While I’m sure we’re all ambitious and would love to add 12 salads to our daily meal planning in our quest for healthy hormone levels, we really strongly encourage you to do what is realistic! In the long run, making changes little by little can make a big difference!

          5. Protein isn’t just for weight lifters

Protein provides amino acids necessary for hormone production and keeps you feeling full (like fiber and healthy fats), which helps regulate insulin levels. Focus on clean sources like lean meats, eggs, and plant-based proteins like lentils and quinoa. Protein also helps support healthy muscle, which is particularly important if you’re considering hormone replacement therapy for improved vitality and balance, but also specifically for metabolic health!

Sugar and processed carbs can cause blood sugar spikes, triggering insulin imbalances that may lead to weight gain and mood swings. High insulin levels can also influence estrogen and testosterone levels, disrupting the hormonal balance in your body. Try replacing sugary snacks and drinks with whole fruits (hooray for the fiber!) to satisfy your sweet tooth naturally.

          3. Wake up to a Cup of Joe - Not Five

Okay, we hear you. This one might not be so easy. While a little caffeine can be a great pick-me-up, too much can elevate cortisol levels, which can disrupt sleep and end up leaving you feeling stressed, rather than being a great energy boost. If you find yourself relying on coffee throughout the day, we’d love to say you should try switching to herbal teas like chamomile or peppermint… but us coffee drinkers will never do that! So our suggestion would be to swap out half your caffeine coffee for decaf, replace one cup a day with water instead, and if the caffeine is from soda we would strongly encourage you to kick the soda habit altogether!!! Ultimately, it’s all about little changes over time.

          4. Consider Ditching the Dairy

For some people, dairy can interfere with hormone levels due to the presence of natural hormones and growth factors. If you suspect dairy might be impacting your hormonal health, consider trying alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, or our favorite coconut milk! Remember, everyone’s body reacts differently, so pay attention to how you feel after consuming dairy, and consider keeping a meal journal to help you associate symptoms with what you’re dined on recently.

Regular alcohol consumption can strain your liver, which plays a key role in metabolizing hormones. Over time, this can lead to imbalances, particularly with estrogen. Moderation is key here—stick to one drink a day or less to minimize potential hormone disruption.

Happy hormones can mean better sleep, less fatigue, a better sex life, better mood, improved energy and so much more. Finding the right balance of foods can be a powerful way to support your hormones naturally, but it’s also important to recognize that creating healthier habits in itself can be stressful! Changing your diet overnight is STRESSFUL. Kicking soda, alcohol, and sugar all at once and starting to eat 9 servings of broccoli every day is STRESSFUL. Little changes over time can create the best results! If you are dealing with significant hormone imbalances, food is a great first step - However, if you’re experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or mood swings, it might be time to explore hormone replacement therapy or other functional medicine diagnostics or treatment options. Our practice in Green Cove Springs offers personalized HRT plans tailored to your needs, helping you regain balance and vitality without a stressful diet overhaul.

What is the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are like the perfect piece to the puzzle — they fit right into your body’s hormone receptors because they’re identical to what your body naturally makes. They’re usually derived from plants and your body treats them as if they were its own.

Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are like puzzle pieces that are just a tiny bit different in shape. They still fit, but they’re not an exact match to your body’s own hormones, which can sometimes lead to different effects.

So, the main difference? Bioidentical hormones are a closer match to what your body produces naturally, while synthetic hormones are a bit more like a close-but-not-exact replica. Both can be effective, but one is a slightly better fit than the other.

How long can I safely take hormone replacement therapy?

How long you can safely take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) really depends on your unique needs and how well it’s working for you. For many people, it’s safe to use HRT for several years, especially if it’s helping with symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, or low energy.

Generally speaking, hormone replacement therapy should be given at the smallest dose possible for the shortest time possible. But if you’re feeling good on hormone replacement therapy and your doctor agrees, some people continue using it long term.

The key to knowing what is best for you? Keep checking in with your healthcare provider. They can help guide you based on your symptoms as to whether it's in your best interest to continue therapy or possibly look for other solutions to your symptoms. Every person is different and the solution to your hormone imbalance might not be one simple treatment.

Can hormone replacement therapy help prevent osteoporosis?

Yes, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help prevent osteoporosis, especially when started around the time of menopause. During menopause, estrogen, one of the hormones commonly used in hormone replacement therapy, naturally declines. Because of this, bones can become weaker and more prone to fractures.

By restoring estrogen levels, HRT can help slow down bone loss and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. However, it’s important to weigh the benefits against any potential risks with your healthcare provider to determine if HRT is the right choice for you, especially for bone health.

Does hormone replacement therapy increase the risk of breast cancer?

There can be a slightly increased risk of breast cancer with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), particularly when it involves a combination of estrogen and progesterone. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is a safer choice. This risk varies depending on factors like the type of hormones used, the duration of therapy, and your individual health history.

For women using combined HRT (estrogen and progesterone), studies have shown a slightly increased risk of breast cancer, especially with longer use. However, the risk tends to return to normal after stopping HRT. Estrogen-only HRT, often prescribed to women who have had a hysterectomy, carries a lower risk, but it's still important to discuss any potential risks with your healthcare provider.

Deciding whether to use HRT is a personal decision that should involve a thorough discussion of the benefits and risks with your doctor, considering your health history and specific needs.

Can hormone replacement therapy help with weight management?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could be the boost your body needs, but it's not a magic pill that we can take for weight loss. As we age, our hormones go through changes that can slow down our metabolism, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. By bringing those hormones back into balance, hormone replacement therapy can help rev up your metabolism, reduce fat storage, and support maintaining healthy muscle.

Another factor to keep in mind is that hormone replacement therapy works best when teamed up with healthy eating, regular exercise, and a balanced lifestyle. If this seems like something that could support your weight loss goals,

           - The best way to determine if hormone replacement therapy is a fit for you is to do a thorough consultation.

Can hormone replacement therapy help me sleep better?

YES. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can definitely play a role in improving sleep, especially if your sleep issues are related to hormonal changes. During menopause or andropause (men's version of menopause), fluctuations in hormones affect sleep quality, and can also cause disturbances such as insomnia or night sweats.

By balancing these hormones, hormone replacement therapy can help reduce these symptoms, making it much easier to get a good night's sleep.

It's also important to consider that hormones are not the only potential cause of symptoms such as insomnia or poor sleep quality. Adequate nutrition, exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and stress may be other factors that play a role in sleep health. Therefore, it is important to work with your healthcare provider to definitively determine if hormones are the culprit of your sleep issues, or if other factors may be playing a role.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue hormone replacement therapy is a highly personal one, and it's essential to have open and honest discussions with your healthcare provider to weigh the potential benefits and risks based on your unique situation.

Why did I create Unique Health? Well, for starters I come from a background as a Nurse Practitioner and have been in the medical field for over 31 years! I've quite literally seen it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly. But while helping people is truly the light and joy of this profession, the paperwork, politics, and dealing with insurance companies was most certainly, not. While many people think that insurance always looks out for your best interest, there is a hidden battle between heathcare providers and insurance companies where healthcare providers often struggle and have to submit claims over and over again just to be reimbursed for the work they are doing. It often results in less time they are able to spend with patients... and less time that they can truly commit to your care.

These challenges in the healthcare system led me to create Unique Health, where we have a vision for a higher standard of healthcare with a few key highlights:

Wellness Focus: We are not the 'medicate and send you on your way' type. We take the time to get to know you, your lifestyle, your habits, what you want to change, what we need to work on, and so much more. We commit to work on your wellness with you (you need to put in the work too!)

Time: Have you ever been to a doctor's visit where you spend 20 minutes with the nurse practitioner and then 3.5 minutes with the doctor? We don't love that kind of medicine either. We are committed to getting to know you and learn about your health concerns, without trying to run out the door to the next patient.

Cash Based Care: As a unique component of our practice (which more and more practices are opting for by the day), we are a cash based practice and do not work with insurance companies. What does this mean for us? It means we don't need to hire a staff member to literally sit on the phone with insurance companies all day. It means we get to spend more time caring for and working with YOU, our patient. It means that all of our recommendations are based solely on your wellness and what we believe is in the best interest of your health, NOT just what insurance companies are willing to reimburse. It means less expensive care for you overall because we get to put in the time and the work to get to the roots of your concerns right away, rather than spending 3 minutes with you per visit accomplishing nothing!

How Stress affects your hormones: And more importantly, what you can do about it!

We all have heard that stress can make your hair turn grey, your wrinkles look worse, your skin look dull... But how does that actually work?! And more importantly, what can you do to stop this from happening?!

Did you know that stress doesn’t just affect your mood — it can also have a serious impact on your hormones?

We’ve all felt stressed at one point or another... or perhaps it's daily, hourly, or minute to minute! Whether it’s work deadlines, family responsibilities, or unexpected life events, stress can creep into our lives and, over time, start wreaking havoc on our health. For women in particular, stress and hormones are closely intertwined, and when things get out of balance, the effects can ripple throughout your body.

When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol—commonly known as the "stress hormone." While cortisol is helpful in short bursts (like during a workout or in a real emergency that gives you that 'fight or flight' feeling), long-term stress can keep your cortisol levels elevated. Over time, this can lead to hormonal imbalances and inflammation that affect everything from your energy levels to your weight... sleep... even mood! The

So, obviously this sounds important, but how does it actually affect your hormones? Well, hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and even testosterone can be thrown out of balance by constantly elevated cortisol and the resulting inflammation. As you may know, these hormones play a major role in regulating your menstrual cycle, reproductive health, and ultimately your overall well-being. If you're feeling overwhelmed, experiencing irregular periods, mood swings, or weight gain, stress and your hormones might be to blame and might be something worth looking into with your healthcare provider.

can come to the rescue! We are maybe a little biased over here at Unique Health, but that is because we have seen the results over and over again! HRT can help restore hormonal balance by supplementing the body with bioidentical hormones that match those naturally produced by your body. For women dealing with stress-related hormonal imbalances, hormone therapy can be game changing, and complimenting HRT with small healthy lifestyle changes can make this treatment really go the extra mile.

A tailored approach to hormone balancing not only can allow your body to function at its best, but can actually help your body respond to stress and manage it in a healthier way. Hormone replacement therapy doesn’t just treat the symptoms—it gets to the root of the hormonal imbalance, helping you feel more like yourself again.

Of course, HRT is just one part of the solution, and working with your healthcare provider can help you determine if there are other factors that may be contributing to your hormone imbalance or stress. Other labwork may be recommended to make sure that vitamin levels are sufficient, inflammation isn't present, or other factors that can certainly contribute to both stress and hormones levels! As we age, a healthy lifestyle is truly the key to supporting long-term hormonal balance. Here are a few of our favorite tips for ongoing longevity:

Prioritize Sleep: We know, we know. It's so hard right?! So many things to do and so little time! But, making it a habit makes it easier. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Set that TV timer. Plug in your phone on the other side of the room. Set a bedtime alarm to remind you to GO TO BED! We also love these great sleep tips from the

Stay Active: Regular exercise helps keep cortisol at a healthy level, and boosts the production of feel-good endorphins. No time? No problem. Fit it in where you can. Take a walk on your lunch break, do some squats between phone calls in your cubicle, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Little changes add up to BIG results!

Balanced Diet: Eating whole foods rich in fiber, healthy fats, and protein can help stabilize your blood sugar and hormone levels. Consider incorporating hormone-balancing foods like flaxseeds, avocados, and leafy greens into your diet. Having a tough time fitting in all the cooking? Try a meal prep day on the weekends and make a hearty pot of soup that can last you through some of the week. Try to focus whole foods rather than anything that comes in a wrapper. Make meals that include at least 3 food groups in a balanced way. The more you practice this, the easier it gets we promise!!!

Mindfulness: Practices like meditation and deep breathing can help reduce stress and prevent it from wreaking havoc on your hormones. Not a big yoga fan? Spend more time outdoors or start a new hobby that requires you to be outside in nature. Declutter your schedule as best you can to have time to just breathe before running on to the next thing. Do your best to put down the phone and be in the present with the people around you! Practicing mindfulness can be a great way of self-regulating, which can affect how you respond to stress to begin with!

Talk to a Healthcare Provider: If you aren't getting answers as to why you have terrible fatigue, can't sleep at night, and your libido is terrible, it's time to check those hormones! It's also important to consult with a healthcare professional who specializes in hormone therapy, so that you don't have an appointment where you're told "You should relax a little more and get some more sleep". At Unique Health, you will find that we take these symptoms seriously and will work to get to the bottom of them.
